Then David and the doctor left the hangar and were out of hearing distance.
âWhat were those things?â David asked.
âIntelligent machines, automata,â Bonesaw said. âMats for short.â
âWho put them there? And why?â
âNo one. I suspect theyâve been there since the war.â
âBut I thought all automata were destroyed when the war was won?â David said, wrinkling his forehead.
Bonesaw chuckled. âThatâs what they taught you at school, right? Itâs a lie, of course.â
They arrived at the infirmary, and the doctor asked him to take a seat in her examination chair again.
âYou should talk to Aztec and Nightingale about it,â she said, switching on her machines. âThe Legion was originally created to fight Mats. It was only later they turned into a tool of control for the Pentad.â
âThatâs crazy,â David said, shaking his head. The memory of the hundreds of killing machines out for their blood made him feel ice-cold.
âOh, darling,â the doctor sighed, studying the hologram of his brain scan. âIâm afraid youâll learn that nothing you thought was real is, in fact, reality.â
âDoes the crew of the Nephilim encounter those⦠things often?â
âNo. Especially not in such numbers. We mostly deal with humans and cyborgs. Depending on the contract, it can be space pirates, rivaling mercenary groups, or even authorities.
âAlright, everything looks fine to me. You might feel a little dizzy for the next couple of hours, but that will pass. You were lucky, you know?â
David nodded in relief. âDid I pass out?â
âOnly for a second or two. Almost as if your brain performed a reboot right before it could take too much.â
âLike a machine.â
âTechnically the human brain is a biological quantum computer, and a very powerful one. But I donât want to bore you with such things now. Why donât you go and find yourself some food, then get some rest? Iâll schedule your procedure for a couple of daysâ time to give your brain time to heal.â
âWhat procedure?â
The doctor smiled. âYour new gear, darling.â
âYou think Iâll be allowed to stay on board?â David asked, his heart skipping a beat in excitement.
âAbsolutely. The Duchess seems to have taken a liking to you. She insisted you go on the mission even though Nightingale didnât like the idea at all. You did great down there, and Iâm sure sheâll welcome you to the crew officially soon. Congratulations, youâre a true space punk now!â
