Then David and the doctor left the hangar and were out of hearing distance.

“What were those things?” David asked.

“Intelligent machines, automata,” Bonesaw said. “Mats for short.”

“Who put them there? And why?”

“No one. I suspect they’ve been there since the war.”

“But I thought all automata were destroyed when the war was won?” David said, wrinkling his forehead.

Bonesaw chuckled. “That’s what they taught you at school, right? It’s a lie, of course.”

They arrived at the infirmary, and the doctor asked him to take a seat in her examination chair again.

“You should talk to Aztec and Nightingale about it,” she said, switching on her machines. “The Legion was originally created to fight Mats. It was only later they turned into a tool of control for the Pentad.”

“That’s crazy,” David said, shaking his head. The memory of the hundreds of killing machines out for their blood made him feel ice-cold.

“Oh, darling,” the doctor sighed, studying the hologram of his brain scan. “I’m afraid you’ll learn that nothing you thought was real is, in fact, reality.”

“Does the crew of the Nephilim encounter those… things often?”

“No. Especially not in such numbers. We mostly deal with humans and cyborgs. Depending on the contract, it can be space pirates, rivaling mercenary groups, or even authorities.

“Alright, everything looks fine to me. You might feel a little dizzy for the next couple of hours, but that will pass. You were lucky, you know?”

David nodded in relief. “Did I pass out?”

“Only for a second or two. Almost as if your brain performed a reboot right before it could take too much.”

“Like a machine.”

“Technically the human brain is a biological quantum computer, and a very powerful one. But I don’t want to bore you with such things now. Why don’t you go and find yourself some food, then get some rest? I’ll schedule your procedure for a couple of days’ time to give your brain time to heal.”

“What procedure?”

The doctor smiled. “Your new gear, darling.”

“You think I’ll be allowed to stay on board?” David asked, his heart skipping a beat in excitement.

“Absolutely. The Duchess seems to have taken a liking to you. She insisted you go on the mission even though Nightingale didn’t like the idea at all. You did great down there, and I’m sure she’ll welcome you to the crew officially soon. Congratulations, you’re a true space punk now!”
